Three Longfellow Songs is a setting of three poems by renowned American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I chose these particular works because each strongly implies its own unique musical elements within the text. From the contemplative melancholy of “Changed” to the syncopated yet flowing rhythm of “A Day of Sunshine” to the meditative ostinato in “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls,” the character of each song differs greatly, allowing them to be performed together in a set or independently as stand-alone pieces.
