Andreas Christi Famulus uses the same text as the motet by Christobal de Morales but the relationship ends there, as there is no musical connection shared between them.
The lyrics have always inspired me. My intention was to create a work that sparkles, not at all depressing, with the most dramatic moment occurring at the words VIDENS ANDREAS CRUCEM (Andrew saw the cross).
Symbolic gestures appear throughout this score. For example, bar 33 (the number for Christ) contains the climax of the piece, and in bar 80, (Christ and Crux), the "crux" begins with a chord comprised of CFGC, representing the saltire. The piece also ends with a C Major (C meaning Christ, again) chord - after a lot of dissonances! - to give St. Andrew the "liberation" that he deserves.

Andreas Christi famulus, dignus Deo apostolus, germanus Petri, et in passione socius.
Dilexit Andream Dominus in odorem suavitatis. O Jesu Christe, Fili Dei, ora pro nobis. Sanctus Andreas gaudet in caelis. Amen. |
Andrew, a servant of Christ, a worthy apostle of God, brother of Peter and companion in his suffering.
The Lord loved Andrew, like a sweet smelling perfume, O Jesus Christ, Son of God, pray for us. Saint Andrew rejoices in heaven. Amen. |
